There are many people out there who miss their regular annual servicing on their Volvo or Toyota. There can be a multitude of reasons why, such as you can't afford it, the car is driving well or you simply forgot for example.
However, missing a car service based on either you cant afford it or you think your car is fine is just false economy. Preventative Maintenance is ALWAYS going to be cheaper that Reactive Maintenance. Car parts that get changed on your regular servicing such as filters and fluids are changed because they have come to the end of their life and are no longer doing the jobs they are supposed to do. Oil for example helps to lubricate the moving parts reducing friction and keeping parts cool. Dirty contaminated oil or not enough oil can have a very expensive detrimental effect on your engine – the cost for a replacement one could cost thousands. Not only will you have to source a reconditioned engine, you will also have to pay the labour cost of removing the old engine and fitting a new one - this is a very labour intensive job.
By missing your regular service you expose yourself to invalidating your warranty, the possibility of a breakdown....and repairs and a reduction in the re-sale value of your Volvo or Toyota with incomplete service history. Research shows that a vehicle with missing history can attract up to a 1/5 less than one with complete history. This can make a big difference in the value of your vehicle and how many people would consider being a potential buyer of a car with incomplete service history. One of the best ways to reduce the costs of your servicing is to take your Toyota or Volvo to your local independent garage and not to a dealership. The hourly labour rate in a dealership can often be 3-4 times the cost of the hourly rate of a reputable independent garage. Do your homework and shop around for quotes. You will be surprised at the savings you can make. You will not invalidate your warranty if you adhere to the manufacturers service schedule and have genuine parts fitted – you are free to take your Volvo or Toyota anywhere you want for your servicing and repairs under your Right To Choose campaign.
