Why Is My Check Engine Light On?

Engine Warning light

The blog this week is about why your Check Engine (Engine Management Light) warning light may ignite on your Volvo or Toyota dashboard. Please do not ignore these warning lights they are there for a reason. They illuminate when there could be a potential issue – please get your car to your local independent garage for further investigation if you are concerned once you have followed the advice below and nothing changes. Read on to find out more:

Nowadays every new car now comes with On Board Diagnostics. On Board Diagnostics is a system that registers faults within your Volvo or Toyota connected through sensors all over your Volvo
or Toyota, the engine and fuel and emissions systems. There are thousands of codes so the only way to pinpoint exactly what the problem is, is to take it to your local independent garage and get them to hook it up to their diagnostic kit, like Vida for example, to identify the fault code and action the problem. This helps them to quickly identify where the issues are keeping your costs down. Once the problem has been identified the garage will advise you on how to remedy the problem. They can also then clear down the fault codes and reset the system once the problem has been rectified. The thing to do is not to panic or ignore it. Quite often than not it can be something so very minor and inexpensive. Do not carry on driving ignoring the light hoping it will go away (sticking your head in the sand is not an option) – modern cars nowadays are ultra-sensitive – so get it checked out ASAP at your local independent garage. Ignoring warning lights could lead to expensive repair bills – better to be safe than sorry. Of course, getting your Volvo or Toyota regularly serviced and maintained will help maintain the health of the engine. Helping you to get the most out of the moving parts before they need replacing. Not actioning issues can more often than not have a detrimental effect on other parts of the car that could easily have been avoided – preventative maintenance over reactive repairs any day of the week!
