ACC UK Ltd, Winners of The Independent Garage of the Year 2015 & Inspire Customer Service Excellence 2016 Award,
are Servicing, Repair & MOT Specialists based in the heart of Farnborough, Hampshire. We like to give you hints and tips on maintaining your Volvo
or Toyota to help reduce breakdowns and expensive car repair bills.
The blog this week is about what you can do to ensure your Volvo or Toyota is winter ready. As the nights get increasingly colder (we have been having
a bit of a mild spell of late) we want to ensure that our Volvo or Toyota doesn’t struggle in the mornings. We need to lavish a bit of TLC on our vehicles
to keep them in optimum health to get them through the cold dark months.

When did you last check your antifreeze?
Antifreeze or coolant – whatever you wish to call it is very important throughout the year. Make sure that you check your levels and top up if necessary.
If in any doubt as to the correct mixture pop into your local independent garage where they will be more than happy to help and advise. It is always
handy to carry a spare bottle of pre mixed in the boot of your Volvo or Toyota – you never know when you may need this.
When did you last check your battery?
If the battery on your Volvo or Toyota is more than five years old, you may find it starting to get harder to start your car in the cold. A failed battery
is one of the most common causes of a breakdown in the winter. If need be change your battery before the winter period sets in. You can read previous
blogs on how to disconnect/connect the battery correctly or take your Volvo or Toyota to your local independent garage where they can assist and also dispose of your old battery in the correct manner. You cannot just put it in the rubbish bin – it will need to be taken
to your local recycling depot.
When did you last check your lights?
You should be checking your lights, fog lights and indicators on a weekly basis. Ensure that they are all working as you will be using them more frequently
during the winter than in the summer. Lights are not just for your benefit they are for the benefit of other road users and pedestrians. Faulty break
lights can result in a fixed penalty notice of a £60 fine and three points on your license. Light bulbs can fail at any time – so frequent checks are
vital. Carry spare bulbs in your car so you can change them when you notice them not working or failing that take your Volvo or Toyota to your local
independent garage.
When did you last check your tyres?
If you have read our previous blogs on tyres you should know how to check your tyre depth using the 20p method. For winter driving, with the rain, sleet
and snow your tyre health is vitally important to avoid accidents. You really should ensure that you have 3mm tyre depth tread and that they have the
correct tyre pressures – to find out what the correct tyre pressure is check your Volvo or Toyota owners hand book.
