The blog this week is about winter driving tips whilst out on the roads in your Volvo or Toyota. We are seeing so many different weather variations all over the UK at the moment from snow, ice, heavy rains, flooding, high winds and low sun to mention a few. So are you prepared? Is your car ready to safely transport you to your destination? Read on to find out some top tips:
Did you know that the braking distance is ten times longer when driving on snow and ice? Therefore you and your car need to be fully alert! Only make the journey if it is absolutely essential. If you really need to make that trip in snow and ice then please leave yourself plenty of time – less haste! Adjust your driving to the current road conditions. Ensure that you have a fully charged phone, warm clothing and plenty of fluid and snacks and preferably a full tank of petrol just in case you become stranded!
Tyres - When the roads are covered in snow and ice, (you may not be aware of the ice) it is critical that your tyres are ready to handle the conditions. When was the last time that you checked your tyres? The pressures? The tread? As a car owner it is your responsibility to make sure that your tyres are legal and safe. Some customers ask if it is essential to fit winter tyres? This is totally your preference. Consider the journeys that you take and the location that you live. Also do you have somewhere to store winter tyres when you are not using them? Yes winter tyres will provide more grip during times of snow and ice, after all that is what they are designed to do.
Winter Check – some garages may offer winter checks – contact your local independent garage if you want a professional to check over your Volvo or Toyota. You can however check some of the items yourself. The types of items covered in a winter check are as follows:
- Exhaust System
- Battery Condition
- Wipers and Washers
- Air Conditioning System
- Antifreeze Coolant Strength and Level
- Tyre Condition
- Screen Wash
- Lights and Electrics
If you have extended your MOT because of Covid or missed your regular servicing schedule it is imperative that you get your Volvo or Toyota checked. Driving in the winter can be a treacherous business!
Air Con – When was the last time you got your air conditioning system in your Volvo or Toyota checked? The air con system not only operates to cool your car it also heats your car so ensuring you have no leaks and your refrigerant levels are good is important. As in previous blogs we have stated it is good practice to run your air con regularly throughout the winter to ensure there are no issues and to avoid those bad smells. You should only use a garage that has the relevant certificates to carry out a regas etc. Happy Safe Motoring Folks!
